MEC hands over bicycles to local school

“This will help change their behaviour around road safety at an early age,” he added.

Tsakane – MEC of Transport in Gauteng Ismail Vadi handed over six bicycles to learners of Geluksdal Secondary School during a ceremonial event held at the school on Friday.

The other 150 learners will receive their bicycles soon.

The bicycle handover project, titled Shova-Kalula, is undertaken in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government.

This was part of the 3 000 bicycles handed over to the municipality to distribute at various schools in the area.

Vadi says this is to help ease the mobility of needy learners walking over 3km to and from school.

“The project’s objective is to maximise the use of non-motorised transport to enable communities to access social opportunities.

“It will also ease the strain of walking long distances to and from school.

“It also seeks to promote cycling as a low-cost mobility solution to low-income households, targeting mainly learners,” he adds.

Vadi further explained in addition to the handover, the city will also provide road safety training to the beneficiaries.

“This will help change their behaviour around road safety from an early age,” he added.
