EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago says the delay in the re-issuing of driving licences was caused by the industrial action embarked upon by the Drivers’ Card Collection Agency which halted the production of driving licences for some time.
The problem did not per se emanate from the City of Ekurhuleni but was from national, thus the fault did not lie entirely with the licensing departments.
The strike action by the agency ended during the past week as deliveries started trickling in from last Thursday.

“The problem is not entirely resolved as there still exists a huge backlog and the licensing division is working fervently to reduce it.
“The EMPD (licensing division) wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused and assures the public that efforts to expedite the process are underway.
“To those who had to fork out a few rands to obtain a temporary driving licence due to the problem, not of their making, the EMPD earnestly apologises for the inconvenience,” says Kgasago.
