Schools from around the district, community movers and shakers, gathered at the Springs Civic Centre as learners and teachers were rewarded for their hard work in extracurricular activities.

In her address, district director Somikazi Chabalala heaped praises on the school staff for their effort of encouraging learners to perform well in their school work and in extracurricular activities.

“As the department, we must teach learners and encourage extra curriculum development as well.

“We forget that involvement of learners in sporting and cultural activities account for their holistic development.

“Regardless of all other demands, we have to make it possible to create time and space for learners to engage in programmes of value, culture and sporting activities,” says Chabalala.

Chabalala also emphasised the role sport could play to minimise disciplinary challenges schools face in the classrooms.

Award recipient, Innocent Mayoyo, says he appreciates the recognition by the department for his contribution.

“We are happy that the department has allowed us to extend our work into schools’ grounds.
