Local author tackles rape in a book

She decided to start a new chapter in her life through The Things She Remembered, which reveals intimate parts of her life and those of others, as well as her powerful encounters with God.

Kwatsaduza – Author of The Things She Remembered Gugulethu Nkutha believes that pain and dejection know no skin colour, social standing and cultural differences.

The book seeks to drive conversations in helping people who are victims of shame and self-loathing rediscover their self-worth and purpose again.

“The book is a fictional account of valuable life lessons worth sharing, especially for men, women and families struggling through pain and loss as they find themselves on a journey to self-forgiveness and self-discovery.

“Fear, shame and guilt are some of the emotions that we all wrestle with.

“We struggle to realise that the first step to healing is self-forgiveness.

“It is even worse when these feelings are as a result of a traumatic experience and pain that was inflicted on us by those who claim to love us and are closest to us,” she says.

She explains young women and men have lost their way due to depression, peer pressure and other societal issues, with women and children being the biggest victims of abuse.

In her book, she narrates a story of 16-year-old Estelle who was raped.

“She finds herself having to abort her child following the ordeal, something many young women are forced to go through,” she says.

Gugulethu says she sees the book as her way of starting conversations to these issues while also finding meaningful solutions.

“It has been through my many encounters with God, as well as my work in areas of counselling and my

travels, that have led me to the story of Estelle and the writing of this book,” Gugulethu reveals.

Gugulethu is a three-time nominee for the 2018 11th SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards.

“I was nominated in the Best Newcomer, Best Contemporary Song and Best Community Outreach Artist.”

This proves her outstanding determination to use any platforms in order to bring the message through, even in song to lift people’s spirits up.

Born and bred in the Eastrand townships of KwaThema and Tsakane, Gugulethu is self-published author, who has spent more than 17 years in corporate marketing.

She decided to start a new chapter in her life through The Things She Remembered, which reveals intimate parts of her life and those of others, as well as her powerful encounters with God.

She describes herself as a sister, caregiver and activist for God.
