Committee not satisfied with progress of community projects

“Even though there’s an indication that work has been done in various wards, we are concerned that some of the work is unsatisfactory.

Duduza – Members of the Ekurhuleni mayoral committee paid a service delivery oversight visit to the Lungile Mtshali Community Development Projects across Ekurhuleni last Wednesday.

A former councillor and member of the mayoral committee, Lungile Mtshali died in 2010.

She was known as a servant of the people and the projects were named in her honour.

These are ward-based projects aimed at creating jobs and fighting poverty.

Metro ANC chief whip, councillor Jongizizwe Dlabathi, says the projects focus on energy efficiency, water and sanitation, wetlands rehabilitation, waste management and greening and landscaping, including the renovation of parks.

The site visits were conducted in Tsakane, Duduza, Boksburg and other areas around Ekurhuleni earlier this year.

“Evaluating poverty levels in the city shortly before her passing, Mtshali initiated a community development project known as the R1-million Per Ward Project.

“This project was later officially renamed the Lungile Mtshali Developmental Projects in her honour,” says Dlabathi.

The site inspections are meant to assess whether the money spent on the projects can be justified and whether they are good-quality legacy projects.

“We focused on different wards where most of the projects were near completion.

“Most of these areas previously had dilapidated parks that have since been upgraded.

“Other parks are getting a total makeover,” explains Dlabathi.

He adds, “Even though there’s an indication that work has been done in various wards, we are concerned that some of the work is unsatisfactory.

“We are going to raise these concerns during the city’s executive in council meeting,” he says.
