Advice to men to regularly check prostate cancer

“Most men are scared to take a medical check-up which involves drawing of blood. Thus a lot of them discover they are sick when the virus has reached an advanced stage.

KwaThema – Prostate cancer survivor Ronnie Nkabinde says cancer can be cured if detected early.

This type of cancer is defined as cancer in a man’s prostate, a small walnut-sized gland that produces seminal fluid.

Nkabinde says he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2016 after his annual medical check-up.

“The doctor told me that my PSA levels (prostate-specific antigen) were elevated and referred me to a neurologist.

“The neurologist confirmed that my PSA levels were elevated. He conducted a biopsy and a slight tumour was found.”

Nkabinde says this started his journey to fight off cancer cells from multiplying in his prostate.

“I started with brake therapy treatment in June of the same year. This included placing radioactive seeds around the cancerous prostate tumour.

“I later went through the radiotherapy from October of the same year.

“After undergoing external beam procedure to observe whether the cells are still present or not, it proved that all the cells were absent.

“I had to go through a PSA test after every three months, and later once a year, to make sure the cells were no longer there,” he says.

Ronnie is encouraging men to go for an annual medical check-up to avoid health surprises.

“Most men are scared to take a medical check-up which involves drawing of blood. Thus a lot of them discover they are sick when the virus has reached an advanced stage.

“Take charge of your life and health and know your health status,” he says.

Ronnie offers weekly health workshops on prostate cancer in Daveyton, KwaThema and Tsakane.

“During these sessions patients, caregivers and partners, hear talks from different experts including dieticians, doctors and survivors,” he says.
