Young men want to be good fathers

“Playing an active role in your children’s lives is not a chore and does not mean you are babysitting. It means you are doing what is expected of you.”

KwaThema – Daddy Be Proud, a group of young fathers, spoke in one voice, saying their children will not grow up not knowing their fathers.

They gathered at Harrison Park on Saturday for a picnic and fun day with their children.

This was in response to the national #menaretrash campaign that highlighted some men’s shortcomings and the abuse of women.

During the event, attendees were asked to donate a pack of sanitary pads.

They played with the children and shared goodies and snacks with them.

Event organiser Mpho Dibute says this was the second leg of the initiative to encourage young fathers to be part of their children’s lives.

“This is to say we are going to be a different generation of fathers who are responsible and play an active role in the children’s lives.

“We have heard fathers complaining about some of the challenges they go through to be active in their children’s lives.

“They are often not allowed to be in their lives for different reasons, but difficulties between parents should not affect their relationship with their children.

“This doesn’t require money, but time and love for your offspring.

“Playing an active role in your children’s lives is not a chore and does not mean you are babysitting.

“It means you are doing what is expected of you,” he says.

Mpho says they are seeing an improvement in the participation of the fathers.

“In the beginning we had participants and the interaction was not as open, but today we saw many sharing their challenges and solutions.

“Even in our WhatsApp group we see many joining and offering each other brotherhood, love and advice.

“I believe we will be able to reach out to many and change the way they treat their children,” he says.
