Kwatsaduza – Ekurhuleni caucus has passed a motion to prioritise people with disability when allocating decent human settlement.
The motion was raised during the Ordinary Council Meeting held at Germiston Council Chamber, Germiston Civic Centre on Thursday.
Chief whip of the ANC Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi said as the governing party they have a commitment of building 100 000 houses and 59 000 serviced stands for qualifying Ekurhuleni residents.

“The resolution taken speaks directly to the spirit of Thuma Mina of ensuring people with special needs are also equal beneficiaries of government programmes and services.
“This also ensures there’s a special consideration in allocating decent human settlements for the elderly and people with disabilities, including beneficiaries who have been waiting for their allocation since 1996,” he says.
Dlabathi says through this motion, the Council has resolved that in the construction of houses and fully-fledged serviced stands, the Department of Human Settlement must ensure special needs such as wheelchair ramps and paraplegic ablution facilities form part of the building specification (project scope).

“It was emphasised that the City must, through the Gender, Children, Youth and People with Disabilities Committee, ensure strong oversight with regards to a focused intervention that must address the plight of disabled residents.
“Our commitment to building sustainable and decent human settlements in a manner that also benefits disabled residents is a standing commitment,” he says.
