Warden Frans Phasha was driving with colleagues when he was shot on Welgedacht Road, Holfontein, near the N12, yesterday. He later died at the Parkland Hospital, Springs, according to Springs SAPS Capt Johannes Ramphora.

Phasha drove a white Toyota Hilux which belongs to the Nigel prison facility where he was employed.

He was accompanied by two colleagues driving towards Springs from Etwatwa.

It is alleged that they stopped to offer a lift to two men.

When Pasha asked them to pay for the lift, an argument broke out.

It is suspected that a third suspect appeared from the field.

He fired one shot through the back window which hit the driver on the back of his head.

He told his colleagues that he has been shot and fell out of the vehicle.

One of the original passengers jumped out at the driver’s side door and ran into the field.

The suspects took a cellphone and R120 from the colleagues who remained in the car.

They then ran into the field.

The two suspects were dressed in overalls with reflector stripes.

A small blue cooler box and a white hat were found close to the scene, possibly belonging to one of the suspects.

Phasha was taken to Parkland Hospital.

It was initially reported as an attempted murder and robbery. Phasha later died.
