Towards a stunting-free future

Flourish will introduce antenatal classes in KwaThema to help equip expectant mothers for the road ahead.

KwaThema – Flourish will introduce antenatal classes in KwaThema to help equip expectant mothers for the road ahead.

“Flourish offers mom and baby classes that support, celebrate and empower mothers through the critical first 1 000 days of a child’s life.

“We are a pillar ‘Grow Great’, a national campaign to mobilise South Africa towards a stunting-free future,” says Audrey Mabuza, Flourish’s coordinator in KwaThema.

Stunting is a condition that arises when prolonged under-nutrition affects a child’s physical and brain development.

It is usually defined as the ‘shortness for age’, and can only be diagnosed by comparing a child’s measurement to standardised growth charts.

“The first 1 000 days of life, from conception to age two, is a great opportunity to establish a good foundation for the child’s academic success, health and general well-being.

“However, it is also the period of vulnerability to stunting,” she adds.

The weekly visits will span about ten weeks, to address issues such as ‘connecting with your baby’ and ‘money savvy mommy’.

“We want to help them walk the journey, from the beginning until they deliver a healthy baby.

“We invite women who are in their first and second trimester of pregnancy.”

The first session will take place on October 1, at 10am, at 5 Dlamini Street, Highland in KwaThema.
