57 people were killed daily in Mzanzi in 2017/18

“The crime stats are nothing to write home about when we still have so many people being killed.”

Kwatsaduza – The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele has on Tuesday released the 2017/2018 crime stats revealing reported crimes have gone down in 2018, with a 4.4 per cent decrease from the total recorded in 2016/2017.

There were 1.66 million serious crimes reported in the community in 2017/2018.

Cele says the statistics show there were 20 336 people killed during this period which shows an increase of 6.9 per cent.

“This means there were 57 people killed on a daily basis during this period across the country.”

The Minister explained during a media briefing that he was concerned about the high number of people who were killed daily.

“It doesn’t matter what figures we give out or what has been reduced but if people are still being killed then we can’t find any joy out of that,” he explained.

Gauteng province is occupying the third position in the criminal behaviour motives to murder with 264 cases of mob justice murders, 110 killings related to taxi violence and 28 police killings.

There were 1 662 815 community reported crimes in the country with 438 113 other serious crimes, 433 966 crimes reported as the results of police action.

Cele says they have identified a 2 930 increase in the killing of women with an 11.0 per cent difference of 291 killings compared to in the previous year.

“There were 36 731 sexual offences reported seeing a -661 count difference from the previous year where 37 392 cases were reported in the crimes related to women.

“The minister explains that he is concerned about the 17.4 per cent increase of crimes committed against children girls who were murdered during this period.

“A total of 294 girls were reported murdered while 691 boys were killed with a 20.4 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

“While 691 boys were victims of murder seeing a 20.4 per cent increase from the 2016/2017 period,” he explains.

He further explains there were 115 361 contact crimes which include murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH, common robbery, aggravating and sexual assault which saw a -1.1 per cent decrease during the 2017/2018 period.

As we look closer to home, Tsakane Police Station is occupying position 16 in the top 30 stations reported rape cases with 167 cases of rape reported seeing a 1.8 increase from the previous year where 164 cases were reported.

“Assault GBH category, Tsakane Police Station is showing a 5.1 per cent decrease with a -34 in case difference compared to the previous year.

“The minister has revealed that there were 507 975 property related crimes reported during the period seeing a 30.5 per cent increase,” concluded Cele.

Tsakane police spokesperson, Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu says the statistics indicate that there were more people responding to the call by the police to come forward to report cases.

“We are encouraging residents not to lose hope and trust in the police with regards to the statistics.

“We will only be able to fight crime and bring the statistics down if the perpetrators are brought to the book and face the law,” she says.
