Comedian Noko Moswete says women need to fight harder to reach their dream

“My talent can’t be reduced to me owning a vagina; I only want to be judged as a comedian on stage and off the stage."

KwaThema – Comedian Noko Secondqueen Moswete refuses to be labelled as a female comedian but just a comedian.

The 33-year-old says she refuses for her talent to be reduced to her sexuality.

“I had to prove myself as a comedian, not as a woman; my talent has nothing to do with my sexuality.

“My talent can’t be reduced to me owning a vagina; I only want to be judged as a comedian on stage and off the stage.

“I work just as hard as the male comedians,” she says.

Noko says she also refuses to be labelled as a Pedi comedian because of her place of birth.

“I am originally from Limpopo and very proud of where I come from but I am not a Pedi comedian.

“My jokes are not limited to sePedi. I can converse in all 11 official languages and wherever I perform in the country, I am able to communicate with ease,” she says.

Noko broke into the entertainment industry five years ago while working at a private college as a lecturer.

“I used humour to educate my students, and to this day when I meet with some of them in town, they share some of the jokes that I used to tell.

“I was fuelled with the urge to perform on stage to a bigger stage and started with small gigs at local clubs at night and during the weekends.

“As I was gaining popularity and receiving more gigs, I felt that I had to give up on one of the professions.

The multi-talented Noko holds a degree in linguistics and is a freelance copywriter and creative writer for an advertising agency for some of the popular television advertisements.

On social media, she is known as a character known as Mokgaetjie, a woman from Limpopo who is married to Paulos.

Noko says she advises upcoming comedians to find a voice and not try to imitate anyone.

“You should not doubt your talent or depend on it only; you have to research your topics and know your current affairs,” she says.
