Youth on the Move against drug abuse

The pioneers of change, Youth On the Move, dedicated some of their time to show love to recovering addicts in Extension 19.

Tsakane – The YOTM gang took to the streets to help a group of recovering nyaope addicts set up a vegetable garden.

“On this special day, not only for South Africans but, the whole world, Youth On The Move, wanted to help in eradicating substance abuse in townships.

“Nyaope has caused lots of damage in many black homes, and today we decided to tell a different story,” says Sifiso Magazi, the organisation’s secretary.

He believes that organising the group of addicts clean up gardens will help reintegrate them into the community.

“We want to break the cycle in the time they spend consuming this hazardous drug or thinking of ways of getting a means to their next shot.

“These thoughts lead to the crime rate increasing in the country.”

“We saw a necessity for a permanent hobby to distract these young people from engaging in drugs further and condemning themselves even worse.”

Their intention is to ensure that young people are responsible for utilising and maintaining the garden that is situated on the corner of Malepe ad Maja streets.

“This allows them a chance to make an honest earning and at the same time we hope it will decrease crime and keep them away from the drug itself.”

Nkosinathi Xaba, an addict, says spending his time with YOTM team in the garden will change him because they motivate him.

“We want to restore the smile long lost to Tsakane parents, as they saw their children are doing something positive for a change.”

In a place where there are constant reports of public offences committed in pursuit of quenching their ravenous nyaope hunger, today they are part of the solution.

Youth On The Move continues to stress the fact that engaging in substance abuse and teenage pregnancy ‘is not the swag’.
