Mapaseka redefining beauty

Mapaseka Tembe (19) wants to redefine the ideals of beauty through her ‘Azanian Crown of Beauty Campaign’.

KwaThema – The Face of KwaThema Fashion Weeks admits that she didn’t always believe that she was beautiful.

“When I got to high school, I felt pretty awkward, being tall and dark.

“All my friends were ‘yellow bone’ and short.”

She says her features did not seem to appeal to the boys.

“My self-esteem was very low.”

Mapaseka says her perception of beauty completely changed after she was invited to model at the KwaThema Fashion Week.

“For the first time I was like ‘so I am attractive?’

“It was mind-blowing.”

The model believes that this is when she started to question society’s ideals of beauty.

“We are all so different, but why is that a bad thing?

“Why do we have to look the same to be considered beautiful?”

“I started the campaign to give women who don’t meet the ideals standards of beauty a platform.”

“It seeks to inform and educate the community while destigmatising a certain look.”

The campaign is aimed at women who live with albinism, vitiligo and dark complexions.

“We want to expose different kinds of beauty.

“And we discourage discrimination.”

People need to love themselves as they are, then their beauty shines through their faces.”

“We have a lot lined up for the campaign.

“And we are inviting women of all ages to participate.”
