Three tennis courts ready for handover in KwaThema

Tennis fanatics in the area will be happy to know three tennis courts are ready to be used by the community.

KwaThema – For years the sports deteriorated because there were no longer facilities available for the sport.

But that is a thing of the past because three tennis courts have been constructed in the area along the corner of Shabangu and Moshoeshoe streets.

Ward 78 Cllr Zanele Nyakale says the three courts are ready for the community to use.

“The next phase of the project will be renovating the grandstands and fencing the facility to avoid it being vandalised.

“It took us years to finally convince the municipality to set aside a budget for the sports courts.

“We are hoping the community will protect them and use them to their own benefit,” she says.

Nyakale says they are calling on those with tennis skills to come forward and teach young children.

“We need to make sure that they are used daily and revive tennis in the area like it used to dominate in the past,” she says.

Community liaison officer, Sindy Shabalala, says they are currently working on the final touches and should be ready to hand over by the weekend.

“We are happy that we are able to hand over the courts in record time even though there were challenges of the project being disturbed by residents who wanted to be employed.

“We also had to change from building a netball court and two tennis courts at the last minute,” she says.
