Residents of Marikane took to the streets on Saturday morning demanding for power to be restored in their section.

On Saturday morning the residents could no longer take being in the cold. They blocked the Vlakfontein Road demanding for power to be restored.

Concerned resident Maria Sibeko says the residents were frustrated because they were promised that power would be restored in the evening.

“We spend the whole day without electricity and could not wait to go for another day.

“The only time our leaders listen to us is when we protest.

“A few hours after we blocked the road the electrician, who was on standby, came to assist us.

“This shows they were dragging their feet to helping us,” she says.

On Monday morning the residents blocked the road again demanding RDP houses.

Another concerned resident, Godfrey Ngobese, says they have been staying in the informal settlement for over seven years with very little service delivery.

“In the last national elections, we were promised houses but to this day we are still waiting.

“We are tired of empty promises and will continue being destructive until we are heard.

“We are the residents of this country and deserve services,” she says.

Truck driver Moses Nkabinde says he was driving along the Vlakfontein Road when a group of people ran out of the bushes and started throwing stones in their direction.

“I lost control of the vehicle and drove it off the road.

“As soon as it stopped moving, I, together with my two colleagues, ran for safety.

“The group stole building materials and other equipment,” he says.
