The youth talk about radical challenges

Radical Arts Forum held a talent showcase focusing on reviving the conversation about the social effects of HIV and AIDS, on Thursday.

Duduza – The forum’s secretary, Bheki Radebe, says their task is to revive theatre and literature while getting the community to talk about burning issues.

“This is just one of the programmes we have to achieve our mission,” says Radebe.

Poets and stage actors took turns expressing their opinions about the topic.

“We encourage them to tell us what they know is true, but also what they hear from others.

“It is good for parents and teachers to understand what the young people are talking about,” explains Radebe.

The conversation included a discussion about children who are living with HIV and Aids and if there are programmes structured to address their needs.

“Where do children born with HIV go, for example, to learn how to live with HIV?

“Surely their issues are different from those faced by adults,” a concerned parent in the audience asks.

“We are going to ask for answers from government stakeholders.

“So that if there are no programmes, they can be created,” says Radebe.

The forum will also host the Hat Poetry Contest.

“This contest is designed to give the audience a platform to contribute to the development of poets by determining the prize money to be won by one poet of their choice through bidding.

“A hat is used to collect contributions from the audience to be handed to the performer with the highest bid.”

The hat is also used as the symbol of respect displayed by the audience to the performers by taking out their hats to salute a great performance witnessed on stage.

The last Hat Poetry Contest winner, as per the audience’s choice, was Nomcebo Mbatha from Kingsway who won R500.

The event will take place on Saturday at 11am at the Duduza Library.
