Bishop’s bail hearing postponed

The bail hearing of the Duduza bishop who stands accused of the rape of a minor has been postponed to June 26.

Springs – The 52-year-old man, who is awaiting judgement in another rape case, appeared at the Springs Magistrate’s Court.

This after a teenager laid a complaint against him on May 27.

The court heard that the man has previously been convicted of the rape of a minor, for which he served a six-year sentence.

He was also acquitted of similar charges in 2007, in Phuthaditshaba, Free State.

The head investigating officer said he needed time to conduct further investigations.

He was out on R3 000 bail in the rape case of another minor, for which he was arrested in November 2016.

The judgement for that case is set for June 28.

Earlier this month, angry residents demanded that the church, where the man is a serving bishop, be demolished.

Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters mediated talks between the community and the leadership of the church. But the angry residents did not back down.

They threatened to destroy the building themselves.

Eventually, the members of the church gathered enough people to help them take the church down.
