Run for a purpose at care centre’s fun fair

Lethukukhanya Care Centre will host a ‘Relay for a purpose fun fair’ to help save the home.

Established in 2013, the home runs solely on donations from the public and its founders.

“We moved to this plot at Withoek Estate in 2014 and most of the children have been with us since then.

“We have our hands in agriculture and poultry to create a stream of income,” explains Simphiwe Mnisi.

Co-founder Simphiwe Mnisi, as well as the children and support staff of Lethukukhanya Care Centre, needs the community’s help to keep the centre’s doors open. Support the fun run on July 22 at Tsakane Stadium.

She says their challenge is keeping permanent staff because the centre does not make enough to pay salaries permanently.

“There are many people who help us to get things going, but we understand why some don’t stay because they need to make money.

“As it is, our poultry project is at a halt because we do not have anyone to mind it on a full-time basis.”

The non-profit organisation boasts a vegetable garden that produces vegetables for two major chain stores in the area.

“We also need qualified professionals for child and youth care programs and a permanent psychologist, but we still can’t afford them.”

Mnisi says the true running cost of the centre is about R2.2 million per annum.

“We managed to raise R85 000 at last year’s fun walk, which went a long way but, of course, we hope to raise more money this year.”

Lethukukhanya Care Centre invites all families, companies and individuals to their ‘Relay for a purpose fun fair’ on July 22 at the Tsakane Stadium.

“If you can’t come, please feel free to donate a ticket that can be used by someone else.”
