Learners educated about safety tips

“When one has been burnt, they must avoid putting toothpaste or anything other than cold water on the wound.”

KwaThema – Members of the police and KwaThema Fire Station carried out a motivational talk at Sechaba Primary School on Friday.

The talk was part of the Child Protection Week’s programme which was organised by the two stations.

KwaThema police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Peter Tebeila, says they are concerned about the number of children who are kidnapped across the country.

“We decided to focus this week’s programme on educating the learners about their safety.

“We encouraged the learners to know the registration number of the transport they take home, know their home address and parents’ cellphone number by heart.

“This will help us locate the child’s parents and family in cases of emergency,” he says.

The learners were also warned against sleeping with a brazier or a candle on.

“Since we are in the winter season, we will be receiving emergency calls about homes burnt down because of a candle that was left on.

“When one has been burnt, they must avoid putting toothpaste or anything other than cold water on the wound.

“By educating the learners we are hoping that the information will go a long way and they will share with their parents,” explains Tebeila.

The police also cautioned the learners from taking lifts from a stranger.

“There are people who are preying on young children, offering them lift home and end-up kidnapping them.

“We also discourage them from agreeing to be sent to buy alcohol and cigarettes by the elders in the family.

“This is one of the ways that lead to young people to start experimenting with drugs and other substances,” he says.

In cases of emergency, the community can call 112 from their cellphone.
