Taxi association calls for compliance

Springs Taxi Association have rolled up a new verification system to ensure compliance from all member and vehicles.

KwaThema – The Springs Taxi Association have stepped up efforts to help taxi owners comply with the regulations of the Department of Roads and Transport.

On Tuesday, the association began the rollout of new stickers that validate the compliance of their taxis at the Reedville Taxi Rank.

“We decided to embark on verifying the membership of individuals in the association first so that we get clear numbers.

“Our members had been asking for this for a while now,” explains the public relations officer for the Springs Taxi Association, Wellie Sithole.

He says they needed to ensure that proper regulations and processes were followed to register each member.

“We then turned to vehicle verification.

“Each taxi needs to have the supporting documents in order for it to work here.”

“And we needed to identify those who do not comply.”

Sithole says the association is willing to assist those who have not fully complied.

“We want to assist them to get valid operating licences.

“We invited the Department of Roads and Transport to help us understand all the processes.”

All the taxis that have been verified received a sticker to be identified by law enforcers.

“The stickers will also work as a protective measure for commuters.

“You will know exactly which taxi you boarded because all the numbers are unique.”

He says they had very little trouble because most of their members are complying.

Two-hundred-and-seventeen taxi received their stickers on Tuesday.

“If there are members who have not been able to come, we will ask the department to give us an extension.

“We are after compliance, not trying to shut anyone out.”
