Nurses pledge to treat HIV-positive patients better

“We need to build a society that protects families, children, youth, women, elderly people and other vulnerable members of society.”

Duduza – Duduza Main Clinic hosted a candle-lighting ceremony as part of creating awareness of HIV/Aids in the area.

During the event they commemorated all the people who died of HIV-related illnesses.

Health promoter Nomzekelo Masindwa says the event was an opportunity to acknowledge how HIV and Aids have affected our lives.

“We are all affected by the virus, either positive or negative, and are encouraging health workers to continue treating those who are infected with dignity.

“We are also encouraging patients to adhere to their treatment to suppress the virus,” she says.

The health-care workers also read the Nursing Pledge where they vowed to provide the best service to the patients.

Health worker Queen Mahlangu says people living with the virus need support, education and counselling from the health-care workers.

“They should be able to use the health-care facilities without fear of prejudice or being judged,” she explains.

Sister in charge Mpho Seema says, “We are encouraging the health-care workers to commit themselves to overcome the discrimination and isolation of people living with HIV and Aids.

“We need to build a society that protects families, children, youth, women, elderly people and other vulnerable members of society,” she says.
