Parents commit to supporting recovering addicts

“We understand that the parents also went through a difficult period during their children’s addiction days."

Tsakane – Parents of recovering drug addicts, who are outpatients, participated in a support group meeting on Saturday.

The meeting is held to encourage and educate parents about drugs and how they can support their children who are trying to clean up their act.

The initiative was held by the Tsakane Communication and Sector 4 manager together with the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) Alra Park.

Tsakane spokesperson, Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu, says the parents’ support group is part of the ongoing Sanca Alra Park outpatient drug users programme.

“This is the first of the monthly meetings which will be held.

“Through the sessions we will be able to arm the parents with skills and ways to support their children during this difficult journey.

“We understand that the parents also went through a difficult period during their children’s addiction days.

“We identify their needs and try to come up with ways to support them to recover.

“Their children need their parents to support and forgive them.

“We will not be able to win the fight against drugs if we only focus on the addicts while leaving the victims of their actions behind,” she says.

Mngomezulu says she is happy about the turn-out of parents.

“This shows the parent’s commitment to the treatment and programme,” she says.
