Community Works Programme cleans Duduza Taxi Rank

“We have food gardens from where we donate the produce to disadvantaged families.”

KwaThema – Duduza Taxi Rank is one of the busiest places in KwaThema and often found littered with dirt.

On Monday morning, groups from Ward 77, 74 and 78 who are part of the Community Works Programme decided to volunteer their services by cleaning the premises.

Project manager Mathupe Thobela says the project was initiated three years ago to help keep the community clean.

“We have two groups that take turns by working twice a week.

“We identify areas that need to be cleaned and assign the employees.

“We clean public places, help clean homes, bath some of the elders who cannot take care of themselves.

“We have food gardens from where we donate the produce to disadvantaged families.

“We also clean the infrastructure, clinics, schools and other government buildings,” he says.

Mathupe says they encourage residents to refrain from littering and to use the recycling bins provided by the municipality.

“It will make our job easier if residents loved the environment and didn’t litter.

“We are calling on elders in the community who are unable to take care of themselves to come forward and seek help,” he says.

Ward 74 Councillor Thulani Semilane says they are proud of the positive contribution the project is bringing to the community since they started working.

“We are encouraging residents to work with us in keeping our environment clean at all times,” he says.
