Youth takes care of elderly during winter

A local training academy is helping the elderly to stay warm this winter.

KwaThema – Donovan Mokwape, the founder of Queens Training Academy, started the ‘Granny it’s cold outside’ campaign and KwaThema old age home were their first beneficiary.

“Most of us grew up in our grandparents’ homes.

“And my grandmother would always make sure that we were warm.”

He believes that now is the opportunity for the youth to take care of the elderly.

“Most pensioners are still raising grandchildren.

“And sometimes they can’t even afford to buy themselves socks or a beanie during winter.”

The campaign is aimed at showing gratitude to the elderly for their participation in raising those who can now take care of themselves.

“In another way, we are also provoking a blessing.

“We believe that when we serve our elders and they bless us, good things will come our way.”

Last Monday the academy donated about 180 socks.

Donovan says they intend to do much more.

“I think we neglect them as we go about our busy lives, but we forget the great wisdom that they imparted to us.

“I hope that the relationship we have started with the centre will be ongoing.”

The pensioners were elated with their gifts, singing and dancing out of gratitude.
