Payneville toilets – what is the latest?

Metro installing stormwater drains and sewage pipes on site of Payneville toilets.

The Payneville toilets are still going to be built, but it will be an RDP development instead, according to Ward 75 Councillor Dean Stone.

The land on which the proposed settlement will be built is on the corner of Welgedacht and Grootvaly roads.

The original plan was to have 1 115 toilets built in the area.

“This was abandoned after a significant number of toilets were built as it would not have made sense as people would have still been living in shacks.

“After the community took the metro to court to oppose the development, the decision was then taken to build an RDP settlement,” says Stone.

The residents of Gugulethu Everest would then be moved to this settlement.

Taxpayers, however, have been appalled at the apparent waste of money with the building and subsequent destruction of the toilets and question if the metro was able to salvage any materials from the toilets.

When The Addie visited the site of the settlement this week, the stormwater pipes were still being installed.

At this stage, it is unclear when construction of the houses will begin.

The metro failed to respond in time for publication.
