Phelang School receives newly developed iPad lab

“What’s scarier is that one to two per cent of them are likely to have autism or an autism spectrum disorder.”

KwaThema – Mix Telematics supported Phelang School and donated a newly developed iPad Lab.

The lab is aimed at servicing service the needs of the 16 autistism children (four per cent of their learners), affording them a setting that is conducive to their special needs – a one-on-one learning environment.

Mariette Myburgh, communications officer at Mix Telematics, says research has shown that by 2050, 40 per cent of the world’s children will be living on the African continent.

“What’s scarier is that one to two per cent of them are likely to have autism or an autism spectrum disorder.

“While two per cent might not seem like a lot, it is huge and as such, it is critically important that South Africa places a focus on making provision for these children in the education system.

“By giving them a platform to learn on their terms and in the way that best serves them,” she says.

Myburgh says since April is Autism Month, we decided to partner with the school to help make a difference.
