Illegal electricity connections in Ekuthuleni removed

KwaThema police, the EMPD, the Department of Energy and 300 Red Ants joined forces to remove illegal electricity connections in the area on Tuesday.

KwaThema – They prioritised the cables that were connected to the substation next to Ifa-Lifa Secondary School in Ekuthuleni Informal Settlement.

KwaThema police spokesperson Captain Thabo Sibuyi says the operation was aimed at removing all the illegal cables from the substation leading into the informal settlement.

“These connections are a hazard to the lives of the residents, especially children, who can be electrocuted if they accidentally play with the exposed wires,” Sibuyi says.

Angry resident Mantsha Mogano says it is not fair of the municipality to remove the illegal connections.

“We have been waiting for the city to install electricity in the area for years, but all we ever get are false promises.

“We got tired of waiting and decided to take the law into our own hands and installed the electricity ourselves.

“These people know very well that winter is approaching and decided to cut our electricity supply.

“We are now forced to warm our children with braziers, which can lead to deaths and air pollution,” she says.
