Sidewalk project in KwaThema back in progress

Six-month delayed sidewalk construction from Kgaswane Street to Madi Street is back on track.

KwaThema – The R500 000 project came to a halt in November when the contractor allegedly ran out of funds. Ward 80 Clr Wilson Busakwe says a new main contractor has been appointed.

“We have appointed 11 unemployed, one disabled, and three female residents.

“We are also sharing skills with them to enable them to start their own small businesses in the future.

“The contractor is also working with local subcontractors to provide work experience,” he says.

Busakwe says now that the project is back in motion, they hope this contractor will be able to complete the project in time.

“The first phase of this project will continue to Madi Street.

“It is estimated to be completed in May and we wait for a new budget, which will see the sidewalk constructed to Lintle Street,” he says.

Community liaison officer Shadrack Sereme says he hopes the budget will be approved soon, so they can complete the project.

“We should already be done with the project but the delays hampered progress.

“We are happy the unskilled workers are acquiring skills and will be able to start their own business at the end of the project,” he says.
