Swati community invites young people to learn more about their heritage

Umphakathi wa maswati calls on all the Swati community to join the group.

KwaThema – The group which was formed over 50 years ago aims at helping and supporting the Swati people in Kwatsaduza.

Chairman of the group Jabulani Dlamini says the group was formed by their forefathers when they arrived in KwaThema.

Swati people are proud of their heritage.

“It was also aimed at ensuring that our people don’t feel like orphans and alone in this community.

“We offer those in need of accommodation a place to stay until they find their feet.

“We understand that many come into the area to seek employment and often come across challenges getting their papers in order,” he says.

Dlamini says the group meets once a month to discuss their heritage and culture.

“This ensures that our people do not lose their identity even though they are now in South Africa.

“We also host annual events where people from other cultural groups come together and share their heritage.

“This helps us to restore our heritage and teach young people to be proud of who they are.

“It is heartbreaking to see young people proudly being ashamed of who they are and choosing to associate with the Western cultures.

“The Westerners hold on to their cultures and so should we,” he says.

Emma Hlophe says they are calling on young people, especially women, to join the group and learn more about their heritage.

“It takes a woman to build a family and community.

“Young women of today do not have morals or identity because they were not taught at a young age how to conduct and carry themselves.

“We are here as elderly women to help and support them to become better and responsible citizens,” she says.
