Mayor donates electric wheelchair to KwaThema man

Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina, donated an electric wheelchair to the founder of table tennis in KwaThema, George Motlaping, on Wednesday.

KwaThema – Motlaping’s legs were amputated early this year and so he has to rely on a manual wheelchair to move around.

Masina says when they received a request from the family, they immediately decided to help.

“Motlaping has played an important role in the area related to sports, community development, as well as politics, and we believe he still has a lot to offer.

“We didn’t want his health status to prevent him from attending community meetings or participating in sports.

“He still has a lot of wisdom to share with the young people in the area.

“With this electric wheelchair, he will be able to drive himself to the sporting venues,” he says.

Ward 74 Clr Thulani Simelani says they received the request from the family for a wheelchair after Motlaping underwent surgery.

“We sent our requests to the mayor’s office and the other local business people and are happy that the mayor responded immediately.

“We would like to see community leaders like Motlaping remain active,” he says.

Motlaping says he is grateful for the donation.

“It pained me that I was trapped inside the house and was dependant on others to push me around.

“Now that I have the electric wheelchair, I will be able to go to the stadium to oversee the team and share some of my skills without depending on anyone for help,” he says.
