New housing project empowers small business owners

Small and developing contractors have been appointed to build over 80 RDP houses in Barcelona.

KwaThema- The houses will be handed over to their owners by the Gauteng Department of Housing.

Ward 80 Councillor Wilson Busakwe, says the project was started in 2014 and to date they have built 300 houses and will add 60 more houses after the 2018 budget.

“We decided to empower small construction companies to build the houses for them to gain more experience and to be able to one day compete in the bigger market.

“At the completion of the project, we will have 300 houses in the Barcelona 621 Scheme.

“We want the houses to be completed in the set period because the owners are staying in shacks on the stands,” he says.

Busakwe says the two-bedroom, full bathroom and open plan kitchen houses will be fitted with solar geysers and ceilings.

“We are happy with the work they are doing. The houses are of good quality and as good as bond houses,” he says.

One of the contractors, Sfiso Maseko, says this is a great opportunity for his small company.

“It is not always easy to find business especially when you are still a small business.

“When I heard about the opportunity, I immediately decided to apply for a subcontract,” he says.
