Seven teachers from JE Malepe Secondary scoop excellence awards for Gauteng East District

Seven teachers from JE Malepe Secondary School received best educator awards at the Gauteng East District Academic Excellence Awards last Tuesday.

Tsakane – “We have cultivated a culture of putting in maximum effort,” says principal Walter Mashego.

“And I am glad to see that we are producing the best results for the learners.”

The awards were based on the national senior certificate results of 2017.

The school’s matric Class of 2017 managed to maintain the school’s first place from 2016 by producing the highest matric pass rate in Tsakane.

The school came in at 92.27 per cent, with 68 bachelor’s, 105 national diploma and 30 higher certificate passes.

Mashego, Aubrey Mnisi and Saul Mabunda received best educator awards for history.

“We improved from 99.1 per cent in 2016 to a 100 per cent pass rate in 2017,” explains Mnisi.

“It all comes down to collaborative teaching,” he adds.

Thobile Mabuza and Matshiso Komane’s joint efforts won them the best educator award for tourism.

“We have maintained a 100 per cent pass rate from 2016,” says Mabuza.

“Our distinctions have improved from 18 in 2016 to 25 in 2017,” she adds.

Physical science has proven to be one of the most challenging subjects for learners to excel in, but Sibusiso Mafuyanduna has had little trouble getting his learners to produce good grades.

“When I got to the school, the pass rate was only 45 per cent for physics,” says Mafuyanduna.

“But over the past two years we have achieved 91 per cent.”

Mafuyanduna says excluding Saturday classes, the teachers come in hours before the school day begins and leave late in the evening to make sure their learners grasp the work.

The principal says they also have the support of the parents, the school’s management and the whole staff.

“I am over the moon,” Mashego says.

“And I hope we will only do better from here.”
