Residents educated about safety

Different stakeholders in safety and security took time out to educate residents about some of the services they offer during a community meeting at Theo Twala Primary School last Friday.

KwaThema – The initiative is aimed at educating the residents about the different channels to follow when they need help in case of emergencies.

KwaThema police spokesperson, Captain Thabo Sibuyi, says they decided to call the meeting to help educate residents about the latest criminal activities.

“We believe through such sessions we will be able to fight crime and build a relationship of trust with the residents.

“The police are part of the community and cannot operate in isolation.

“We need the protection of the residents and we can only achieve this if we work hand in hand to remove the criminals from the streets.

“We also wanted to educate them about the different departments and services we offer, other than arresting criminals.

“We have realised that many people still don’t know how, when or why to report a crime.

“They don’t know the different types of abuse, especially domestic violence which goes for years without being reported,” he says.

Sibuyi says they are encouraging parents to monitor their children’s behaviour before it is too late.

“We have identified that young children start experimenting with drugs at an early age, unlike in previous years.

“The sooner they seek help for rehabilitation of the child, the better,” he says.
