Police assist with Grade Eight adjustment

Tsakane – Grade eight girls of all Tsakane secondary schools (20 girls in each school) came together to discuss the challenges of young girls starting the high school journeys.

They tried to come up with solutions themselves while motiving and giving each other tips on surviving the high school life.

The theme came in 2017 after a number of violent incidences occurred in Tsakane schools.

In one, a girl was stabbed by another.

In another incident, a girl burnt another with boiling water and a group of girls took a video of themselves bulling others.

The Girls Dialogue event was declared an annual event that will occur in three phases throughout the year.

The first phase will roll out at the beginning of the school year, where Grades Eights, who are the vulnerable group, will be introduced to high school life.

The second phase is in the middle of the year for Grade 10 and 11 learners, which are believed to be the most problematic group.

The last phase is for Grade Seven learners who will be exiting primary school.

The different stakeholders that had a chance to motivate the learners were Tsakane Mall, Sanca, Department of Social Development, Department of Health, Lethukukhanya Home, Reach for Life No Regrets, Department of Community Safety, Youth on the Move and Department of Education.

Stationery and sanitary pads were also donated to the learners to show them love.

Tsakane police station commander Col Johannes Maass stated that he wants this initiative to be rolled out to all the schools in Tsakane.

“All learners should understand that as police we discourage bullying and gangsterism and other ill behaviour at schools.”
