Suspected burglar beaten to death in mob justice attack

A man was beaten to death after allegedly being caught during a house break-in.

KwaThema – Wenzile Maswanganyi (39) was beaten to death in Extension Two after a house break-in went wrong.

Around 4am on January 29, the owner of one of the houses along Matsepe Street Ext 2 was asleep with his wife when he became aware of movement in his bedroom.

He immediately woke up and chased the suspect out of his house.

The suspect had a brick and hit the house owner with it.

The owner managed to apprehend the suspect while he was trying to jump over the fence.

The owner screamed for help while his wife opened the gate.

Members of the community came into the yard and dragged the suspect to the street.

He was beaten to death.

Upon inspection of the yard, the owner found a computer tower, two pairs of takkies, two car radios and some clothes in a shopping bag.

The car radios appeared to have been stolen in a separate incident.

The owner alleges that a computer monitor, two school bags with books and a laptop were also taken from his children’s bedroom.

The children were asleep during the incident.

It would appear that Maswanganyi was not acting alone.

“We are pleading for the community to avoid taking the law into their own hands,” says Captain Thabo Sibuyi of KwaThema Police Station.

“If you apprehend a suspect, call the police and hand him over to us.

“Mob justice is also a criminal offence and it is punishable by law.”

The police are now investigating a case of murder.
