Gogo celebrates 100th birthday in KwaThema

Elderly woman who was born in 1918 celebrates her 100th birthday.

Family, friends and neighbours gathered to celebrate gogo Ntshantsha Moyeni’s 100th birthday on Tuesday.

“I was born in 1918,” she gushes, with an adamant smile.

Surprisingly witty for her age, gogo Ntshantsha kept all her guests on their toes.

Sibongile Mashaba, a family friend, says gogo even threatened to call the police when they arrived to start preparing the food for the occasion.

“She is hilarious and really great to be around.

“Everyone keeps quiet when she starts speaking because we all want to hear what she says.”

Sibongile believes there will definitely be another party next year because gogo shows no signs of slowing down.

Nongazi Nongalo, gogo’s great-niece, explains how they started celebrating her birthdays from the time she turned 87.

“One day I came to visit her and she said she was going to a neighbour’s house for a birthday party, so I went with her.

“I saw how she enjoyed it and I vowed to organise a party for her, as long as she lives.”

Nongazi says the celebrations are getting bigger and better every year.

“More and more people want to get involved each year.

“And I am happy, as long as we are doing it for her out of love.”

Although gogo Ntshantsha only had one biological child and two grandchildren, many members of her extended family treasure her as their own.

“We also invited many of the pensioners who are her neighbours to celebrate her life with us.

“She walked and invited some of them herself,” adds Nongazi.
