Safety tips for children in public places

Pay attention to what your children are wearing and have a recent photograph of them.

The festive season is fast approaching and parents will be visiting malls and beaches, places that are often packed.

Children can easily go missing in the blink of an eye.

KwaThema police spokesperson Capt Thabo Sibuyi says many children go missing during this period.

It is important that parents and guardians familiarise themselves with the dangers.

“It is important that parents teach their children safety tips to ensure they know what to do should they get lost,” he says.

Here are some safety tips:

* Show children police officers, lifeguards, store cashiers and security personnel so they know who to approach for help.

* Children should be taught to never go anywhere alone and never to talk to strangers.

* Children should be informed about what to do should they be approached by a stranger or if they feel unsafe * around someone known to them.

* Always be wary of new people who are suddenly too friendly to you or to your children.

* Ensure that your children know your name, their name and surname, cell number and their home address which can be used in case of emergency.

* While on holiday, ensure that you know where the closest police station and hospital are.

* Pay attention to what your children are wearing and have a recent photograph of them.

* Always remember, when someone goes missing, make sure you report them to the nearest police

station as soon as possible, as there is no waiting period.
