Police raid KwaThema Hostel

The aim was to banish all things illegal, including drugs, dangerous weapons and unlicensed firearms, from hostels in Ekurhuleni.

The SAPS Ekurhuleni East Cluster embarked on a surprise raid at KwaThema Hostel on Tuesday.

The whole of the premises was turned upside down for illegal substances.

Tsakane police spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu says different police units participated in the raid.

“The objective of the operation was to make sure that all illegal things which include drugs, dangerous weapons and illegal firearms are not kept in the hostels of Ekurhuleni East Cluster,” Mngomezulu says.

“They also aimed to close all the illegal shebeens to help curb the distribution of alcohol illegally to help make the area safe for everyone using it.”

According to Mngomezulu, the operation resulted in the arrest of four people, one of whom was found in possession of dagga.

“One person who was in possession of hard drugs like nyaope, one for possession of explosives and one for selling liquor without a licence.”

The operation is one of many which will follow during the festive season as the police work to ensure safety around the cluster, Mngomezulu says.

“We will not leave any stones unturned to keep our hostels safe for everyone occupying them.”
