Community holds dialogue about drug abuse

“We also encouraged those who are not users to stay away from drugs and spread the message of abstinence among their peers".

Tsakane – Members of safety and security forces, including the Tsakane SAPS, participated in a drug abstinence dialogue in Tsakane on Tuesday.

The dialogue was held to educate young people about the dangers and health effects of drug abuse.

Tsakane police spokesperson Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu says the dialogue was held as part of a campaign building up towards the national programme that will be launched in Duduza soon.

“We are happy that the event was graced by young people and users in the area.

“This made it easy to share the intended message, and we are hoping that those who are already using will seek help provided by the government and other stakeholders.

“We also encouraged those who are not users to stay away from drugs and spread the message of abstinence among their peers.

“The recovering addicts also shared a message of motivation and support with the users,” she says.

Mngomezulu says some of the users who were fresh from rehabilitation centres gave a presentation to the community.

“They were given an opportunity to answer questions from the community and share some of their experiences.

“The dialogue had an impact, as many users want to be rehabilitated and promised to access the help on their own, at their own time, at the facilities that were mentioned, including coming to the SAPS for a referral,” she says.
