Classmates meet after 51 years

Former classmates meet up after more than 50 years.

Charterston Secondary School’s class of 1966 rolled back the years – all 51 of them – when they gathered for their reunion on Saturday, November 18.

It was a joyous celebration at 161 Nigel Road, Selcourt, and laughter was the order of the day as participants took turns re-opening old files, exposing old classmates and re-tracing their steps.

“From the introductions one was able to deduce that the class of 1966 has travelled various routes, followed different destinations and faced insurmountable challenges in pursuit of a better future,” says Dr Nelson Moloko, one of the organisers.

“Their stories resonated with the expression that the road to success is not paved with golden stones.”

Moloko believes the female members of the group experienced the more challenging journeys.

“Typical of difficulties faced by young married females who still dreamed of having a qualification.

“Some had to leave families behind with two or three children in pursuit of better qualifications.”

Praise was also given to Charterston Secondary’s staff of 1966 “for the good foundation they laid, which enabled the class of 1966 to go beyond the education level offered by the school.

“In those days, teachers inspired learners to pursue education, and these days it seems like education is pursuing the learners.”

Moloko was one of the top learners of his class.

“The list included Dr Albert Nhlanhla, a medical practitioner turned businessman, and Khulu Sibiya, the chairman of SuperSport United.”

The Class of 1966’s new mission, says Moloko, is to become friends of their alma mater.
