Mam Sarah, hunger buster

KwaThema – Sarah Masuku’s Tyolweni Drop-In Centre feeds more than 50 children seven meals a week.

“I had a day-care centre, and I noticed that when the older children would fetch the younger ones, they would take the fruits I gave the younger ones,” says Mam Sarah (59).

“That is when I realised how dire the situation is for some of these children.”

She says she decided to extend her programme to cater for the older children as well.

“They have breakfast and supper here every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

“On Sunday I take them to church, then we have lunch together.”

She believes that more than 65 children have at least one meal at her home every week.

“Some of them bring their friends, and I can’t turn them away.”

She says she has a few sponsors who supply her with food, for which she is very grateful.

“I am so glad I can feed them, but I wish I could do more.

“I want them to be guaranteed a meal every day here.”

Mam Sarah started the programme last February out of her own pocket.

“I also live with my brother who is blind.

“It is my desire to also help people with physical disabilities.”

She hopes to secure a facility to run her programme as she has been working from her own house.

“We also need more assistance with toiletries and school uniforms.

“I would really appreciate the community’s contribution.”
