MEC urges learners to return tablets

“Not returning the learning materials is tantamount to theft and they are likely to be prosecuted."

Kwatsaduza – MEC of Basic Education, Panyaza Lesufi, has urged learners who received textbooks and tablets to return them to school in good condition when the year ends.

The MEC says this will enable other learners to be able to use them in the next academic year.

“The safe return of study material enables the department to plan on time for 2018.

“This will ensure that when the schools reopen for the new academic year, we are ready to commence teaching and learning.

“It will also save taxpayers’ money, which can be redirected to other educational purposes, such as the implementation of the GDE Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) strategy, rather than procurement,” he says.

Lesufi says it is important that all textbooks and tablets be returned to schools after final exams.

“If not it will impact on the achievement of access to quality education in South Africa as a whole.

“It also instils discipline and a sense of responsibility amongst learners regarding the adequate management and care of the department’s resources,” he says.

Lesufi says they are also pleading with parents to remind their children to return the department’s resources.

“Not returning the learning materials is tantamount to theft and they are likely to be prosecuted,” he says.
