Springs Taxi Association encourages women to join transport industry

The Springs Taxi Association is encouraging women to join the public transportation industry.

Despite gender stereotypes, women are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities available in the transport sector.

“More women drivers could bring many benefits to the public transportation industry,” say Springs Taxi Association General Secretary, Themba Gininda.

“I think it’s about time we expand the field of qualified drivers in public transportation by encouraging more women drivers to join the male dominated industry,” says Gininda.

“We know women are known to drive safely and I think passengers will feel much safer if women drivers transport them to their destinations.”

Gininda says at present, there are only a few women drivers within the public transport sector and he is fully satisfied with their performance.

Karabo Mashilo, a commuter, says he prefers women taxi drivers when travelling to work and also for his children going to school.

“There’s a woman taxi driver who is quite popular because of the interaction and passion she has for her job,” says Mashilo.

“Generally I think women who transport scholars are trusted and preferred by most parents because they are perceived to be more careful and are caring towards their children.”

Gininda noted protection for women drivers must be drawn up clearly to encourage more of them to join the public transportation industry.

During Transportation Month, Gininda also encouraged people to use public transport when going to work or school.

“Public transport is very affordable,” says Gininda.
