Muppets make maths more enjoyable

Zikwe, of Takalani Sesame, dropped by to cheer up the little ones at the Pholosong paediatric ward.

Tsakane – Every 1 Counts and Takalani Sesame characters put smiles on little faces while teaching them literacy at Pholosong Hospital.

Hillary Mlambo, branch manager at Sanlam says the Kwa-Sanlam tour aims to create financial awareness and numeracy in young children.

“The muppets make it easy for the children to learn because they are having fun.”

The financial institution issued more than 1 000 tickets to the hospital staff and their families to experience the educational fun day.

Children between the ages of four and eight years old made their way to various stations on the field where their numeracy skills levels were tested.

“It was also important for us to help cheer up the children who are patients in the hospital,” adds Mlambo.

The Takalani Sesame characters visited the children in the paediatric ward, one at a time.

“For various reasons, it would not be safe for the patients to play outside.

That is why our visitors came inside to see them,” explains Thabsile Mkhwanazi, communications officer at Pholosong.

And the visit may have done the trick.

“The children are very excited.

“They don’t even want the muppets to leave.”

Mlambo says the institution will return to the hospital to offer staff financial wellness programs.

“We want to teach them how to handle money – how to plan, spend and budget in general.”

He says the branch is also interested in training the youth to become financial advisers.
