Learner burned with boiling water during argument

The angry learner took the kettle filled with boiling water and poured it over the other learner, burning her face and upper body.

Tsakane – An argument between two Grade 10 learners, aged 16 and 18, at Buhlebemfundo Secondary School, resulted in the older one being burned with boiling water last Thursday.

It is alleged an argument ensued between the two and the 16-year-old threatened to teach the other learner a lesson.

She grabbed the kettle and poured boiling water over the older learner’s face and upper body.

One of the teachers, who did not want to be named, says when the learner was asked why she was boiling water in the school kitchen, she claimed she was sent by one of the teachers.

“We didn’t suspect anything evil could come of it because this was nothing new.

“We were shocked when we heard other learners screaming for help, saying that one of them was burned with hot water.

“We still don’t understand what might have made the learner so angry to the point that she would go to such extremes.

“The learner has been suspended and law enforcement were called to intervene,” the teacher says.

Department of Basic Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says the victim is receiving medical attention.

“A case of grievous bodily harm (GBH) has been opened against the alleged perpetrator at the Tsakane SAPS.

“The alleged perpetrator was released into her parents’ custody and has been suspended from school pending disciplinary processes.

“The department wishes the learner a speedy recovery.

“It reiterates its position of zero tolerance against violence,” he says.
