Kwathema – Refilwe Mphutlane is inviting girls to a Ladies In Mission session to encourage them to find their purpose and to value themselves.
“My heart broke when I realised that young women were turning to ‘blessers’ because they did not believe they have other options to create better lives for themselves,” she says.
‘Blesser’ is a term used to describe a man who uses money to lure young girls into sexual relationships with him.
The twenty-two-year-old theology student took it upon herself to educate girls about options that will not destroy their lives.
“I believe they go into these situations blindly.
All they are concerned about at the time are material things, which are temporary.”
Refilwe says society has not done enough to teach girls to be independent and aspire to support themselves.
“We need good role models to mentor us and show us how to overcome the challenges we face daily.”
She explains she has invited notable speakers like Dr Margaret Hlalele, who grew up in and around Kwathema, to share how they have gone on to achieve great things.
“We are encouraging them to get educated by providing information about bursaries and learnerships.”
Refilwe adds that her deepest desire is to see each girl find her purpose and connect with people who can help her fulfil it.
“This is not a once-off event. My partners and I are committed to helping the girls.”
The event will take place on August 12, at 10am in the Kwathema Hall.
Admission is free and lunch will be served.
