Third-term drop in mathematics perfomance

“Those in matric need time to focus on their studies and to rest, through the help of the parents we will be possible".

KwaThema – The members of Ntsane Masiloane School Enrichment Programmes are concerned about the drop in the performance of the mathematics and science learners at Tlakula Secondary School.

The drop is measured against the learners’ performance in the first term.

The school was adopted by the programme in January.

ANC Chief Whip Jongizizwe Dlabathi, a former learner at the school, also adopted the school in a bid to assist the learners to improve their grades this year.

Project manager Ntsane Masiloane says that when comparing their June pass rate to last year’s pass rate, there hasn’t been a notable improvement as yet.

“We are hoping that, come January 2018, Tlakula will be among the top schools.

“We will only be able to win the battle of Mathematics and Science if the learners change their mindset towards the subject and stop viewing it as one of the difficult subjects.

“We are also inviting parents and the community at large to invest their time to support the learners.

“Those in matric need time to focus on their studies and time to rest.

“With the help of the parents, it will be possible,” he says.

Ntsane says they have joined forces with two other local maths institutions, namely Maths Excelling Academy and Ntuthuko Academy, to ensure Grade 12 learners finish their matric with better results.

“Maths, Physical science, Geography, Maths literacy and Accounting classes are held on Monday to Friday from 3pm to 5pm.”

Ntsane says they are inviting parents of learners in Grades Eight to 12, and the school governing body, to a school meeting which will be held on the school’s premises on August 12, from 1pm.

Ntsane says together with the office of the chief whip they will be hosting an award ceremony for learners who performed well in the first and second term.
