Learners visit National Space Agency

“The learners attended an extensive technical lecture about which courses one needs to study to be able to occupy the positions."

KwaThema – Sixty learners studying mathematics, science and geography from Tlakula High School visited the South African National Space Agency and Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory in Hartebeesthoek in Pretoria last Wednesday.

The aim of the visit was to inform the learners about the different fields of work available at the space agency.

It was made possible by Jabulani Mordecai Nkosi, the founder of non-profit organisation Beit-Kodesh, and Boganala Supplies in the area.

School teacher Jabulani Nkosi says the aim of the trip was to expose the learners to the field of astronomy and other scientific careers.

“The learners attended an extensive technical lecture about which courses one needs to study to be able to occupy the positions.

“They included Space Observation, Space Operations, Space Science and Space Engineering.

“The learners were given a broad perspective of science and astronomy,” he says.

Physical science and mathematics teacher, Zandile Mtshali, says the trip was an eye-opener for the learners.

“They got exposed to other careers which included Geographical Information System (GIS) work and many other technical careers.

“They will now have knowledge of different fields that are out there, without being limited.

“It also made them realise the importance of working and studying hard for the upcoming Grade 12 year-end exams,” she says.
