“Savage Sossa” Nogaga creates a brand to put ikasa on the map

Thamsanqa "Savage Sossa" Nogaga (33) believes it is up to the youth to create brands that will put ikasi on the map, and keep it there.

KwaThema – Thamsanqa “Savage Sossa” Nogaga (33) believes it is up to the youth to create brands that will put ikasi on the map, and keep it there.

“I see people wearing apparel with NYC and LA, but they are not proud of their own cities,” says the young entrepreneur.

Savage says he started conceptualising his brand, Street Corner Academy since he was in secondary school.

“I loved drawing characters and I would always make them wear my stuff.

I created the designs from there and when my wife, Thuli, who is a seamstress, came on board she started making the clothing items from scratch.”

He explains that the brand is a lifestyle.

“I make things my friends and I would wear even though we do follow some fashion trends,” he adds.

Savage adds that he had to incorporate music, his other love, into the brand.

“Music is a powerful source through which we can spread a positive message about our city.”

One of the main challenges faced by local brands, he believes, is that lack of public support.

“People expect to pay next to nothing for our products even if they are of good quality.

They don’t respect the craft as much as they value foreign brands.”

Savage says his dream is to see the brand become a household name.

“I want to build something that my son can be proud of while I’m contributing to the economy.”
